Plant-based keratin – vegan protein care for strong & smooth hair

Wheat protein – also called plant keratin – strengthens the hair structure, smoothes porous lengths and improves combability – vegan and biodegradable.

Why keratin for hair care?

Keratin is a protein found naturally in the body and a major component of our skin and hair. About 90% of human hair is made of keratin. This fibrous protein determines the structure, elasticity, and resilience of our hair.

Together with the surrounding fatty acid layer, keratin protects the hair from external influences such as UV radiation, heat or chemical stress.

How is keratin produced?

Conventional keratin comes from animal sources such as wool, feathers, or horns. These components are chemically processed and extracted. Animal keratin is not vegan and is increasingly being replaced by plant-based alternatives.

Why plant-based keratin?

Plant-based alternatives such as hydrolyzed wheat protein offer similar conditioning properties to animal keratin – without using animal ingredients. Plant-based keratin is vegan, environmentally friendly, and particularly well-tolerated by skin and hair.

What are wheat proteins?

Wheat germ proteins, also known as phytokeratin, consist of amino acids – the building blocks of all proteins. In natural cosmetics, they are known under the INCI name "Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein." They are similar to human keratin and improve hair structure and moisture retention.

How are wheat proteins produced?

The proteins are extracted from grains through hydrolysis. This process breaks down the protein chains into microfine particles, creating a yellow, liquid active ingredient that can penetrate deep into the hair, providing nourishing, protective, and structure-building benefits.

Causes of damaged keratin structure

A weakened keratin structure in the hair can be caused by:

  • Chemical treatments such as coloring, bleaching or perming
  • Heat stress from blow-drying, straightening irons or curling irons
  • UV radiation, chlorine or salt water
  • Aggressive surfactants in shampoos
  • Dry heating air or nutrient deficiency

How do wheat germ help with damaged hair?

  • Soothe the scalp & strengthen the skin barrier
  • Smooth porous hair structures & make hair easier to comb
  • Antistatic & protect against hair breakage
  • Improve elasticity & hair volume
  • Provide moisture & protect against external damage

Wheat germ proteins & gluten intolerance

Gluten-containing proteins in hair care products are not problematic for people with celiac disease, as long as they are not ingested orally. Since shampoos and conditioners are only applied externally, there is no risk from gluten-containing wheat proteins.
