Pentylene Glycol (english version)
Pentylene Glycol – Moisture, skin protection & gentle preservation
Pentylene Glycol is a versatile ingredient in modern natural cosmetics. It provides intensive moisture, inhibits the growth of unwanted microorganisms, and improves the absorption of active ingredients into the skin. The active ingredient we use comes from sustainable plant sources such as GMO-free corn and sugarcane bagasse —fully certified organic and natural cosmetics.

Origin & Production
Pentylene glycol, used in natural cosmetics, is biotechnologically derived from plant sugars —more specifically, from non-GMO corn and the fibrous residues of sugar cane (bagasse). It is therefore a sustainable, palm oil-free alternative to conventional petrochemical-based humectants.
Chemically, pentylene glycol belongs to the group of dihydric alcohols (diols) and is not a classic alcohol like ethanol, which can have a drying effect. On the contrary, it has a hydrating and skin-friendly effect.
Effect on the skin
Pentylene Glycol offers several skin care functions in one:
- Moisturizing: As a so-called humectant , Pentylene Glycol binds water and helps to stabilize the skin's moisture balance – for a smooth, cared-for skin feeling.
- Antimicrobial: This active ingredient inhibits the growth of bacteria and yeast on the skin and in the product. This not only helps maintain skin balance but also supports the stability of cosmetic formulations.
- Penetration enhancer: Pentylene Glycol improves the absorption of other active ingredients by temporarily making the skin barrier more permeable – this allows plant extracts or vitamins, for example, to penetrate deeper into the skin.
Function in natural cosmetics
Pentylene Glycol is not a preservative in the legal sense according to the EU Cosmetics Regulation. Nevertheless, it extends the shelf life of products in a completely natural way and is therefore also referred to as a "preservative booster."
Advantage: Products that do not contain traditional preservatives (such as parabens or phenoxyethanol) and instead use pentylene glycol can be labeled as “preservative-free.”
Who is Pentylene Glycol suitable for?
- For all skin types , even sensitive skin
- Ideal for dehydrated, irritated or stressed skin
- In products without declarable preservatives
- Particularly well tolerated in minimalist formulated natural cosmetics
Areas of application
Pentylene Glycol is found in:
- moisturizing facial serums and toners
- Creams for sensitive skin
- natural scalp or hair care products
- Leave-on formulations that are designed to penetrate particularly effectively
Conclusion
Pentylene Glycol is a multifunctional ingredient with a compelling active profile: It provides long-lasting moisture, naturally supports product shelf life, and enhances the effectiveness of other skincare ingredients. It's a true all-rounder in natural cosmetic formulations—without irritating side effects or environmental concerns.
