Introduction / Brief description
Candelilla wax (INCI: Euphorbia Cerifera Cera ) is a yellowish, vegan plant wax derived from the candelilla bush – a wild spurge species native to Mexico. The hard, brittle wax protects the plant in its natural environment from water loss during extreme heat. In natural cosmetics, it provides a supple skin texture, improved hold in hair styling products, and a smooth, nourished finish – all without animal-derived ingredients.
Origin & Production
The wax is extracted from the above-ground parts of Euphorbia antisyphilitica and related species. After the branches are cut, the roots remain intact, allowing the plant to fully regrow within three years. The harvested plant parts are boiled in hot water, where the wax settles to the surface, is skimmed off, and cooled. The result is a hard, brittle wax with a melting point between 67 and 79 °C.
