Bringing Itchy Scalp into Balance

What is itchy scalp?

Especially in winter time, many people suffer from irritated, dry, reddened and inflamed scalp with feelings of tension and excruciating itching. Constant scratching of the unbearably itchy scalp leads to lengthy local micro-inflammations. With an itchy, irritated scalp, the skin’s protective barrier is weakened, so that pollutants penetrate the skin from outside, triggering inflammatory irritation or dandruff.

What are the causes for itchy scalp?

There are different causes for dry and itchy scalp with external and internal factors. A possible cause can be allergies and the infestation of pests such as head lice, mites or fleas. Skin diseases like eczema, neurodermatitis or psoriasis are often accompanied by an itchy, inflammatory scalp as well. Hormonal changes, side effects of medication or prolonged mental stress such as grief, fears and worries can also unbalance the scalp. An unhealthy lifestyle with one-sided malnutrition or smoking can further worsen the symptoms.

In the vast majority of cases, however, aggressive shampoos and chemical hair treatments, dyes or tints cause an itchy, irritated scalp. They contain a large number of known allergens and sensitizers. These are mainly skin-irritating surfactants such as sodium laureth sulfate in conventional shampoos, synthetic preservatives, emulsifiers, silicones and fragrances.

How can you effectively prevent itchy scalp?

Essential is the right scalp care: Thus you can rebalance a reddened, irritated, hypersensitive scalp, simultaneously promoting healthy hair growth:

  • Avoid shampoos with aggressive surfactants
Avoid synthetic shampoos with sulfates. Unfortunately, you will also find unnecessarily aggressive foaming agents such as sodium coco sulfate as the main surfactant in most natural cosmetic shampoos. You can recognize this by the fact that the ingredient is declared at the top of the ingredients list. Sodium Coco Sulfate is of natural origin and certified for natural cosmetics. However, it dries unnecessarily out, irritating your scalp.

Instead, prefer high-quality organic shampoos with optimized skin and mucous membrane compatibility. In all our myrto organic shampoos, we use wash-active amino acids (disodium / sodium cocoyl glutamate) as the main surfactant in maximum concentration. The buffer action of the amino acids stabilizes the skin’s natural acid mantle - supporting moisture balance and regenerating the scalp’s protective skin barrier.

  • Use anti-inflammatory scalp treatments
In order to rebalance your hypersensitive, itchy scalp, we additionally recommend the myrto organic scalp treatment T with anti-inflammatory organic hemp and schizandra. This intensive care soothes irritated, dry scalp, restoring the protective skin barrier with powerful beta-glucan,. The organic scalp treatment T is free from alcohol, emulsifiers, preservatives and fragrances. It is therefore particularly recommendable for hyper sensitive scalp.

  • Reduce the heat when drying your hair
Are you drying your hair with a hair dryer? Switch the temperature to the lowest possible level and be careful not to dry your scalp unnecessarily out with the hot blower. Generally, air drying is of course the best for a satisfied, balanced scalp.

  • Pay attention to your diet
Last but not least, a balanced diet with fresh, vitamin-rich foods is important for a healthy scalp. Above all, rely on fruits, vegetables and whole grains - preferably regional and from organic agriculture.
