Questions and answers about sun protection

Midsummer is here and it's time to start thinking about the best sun protection. It's not just about sunbathing, but also extensive outdoor sporting activities that significantly increase the skin's exposure to UV rays. In this article we clarify the FAQs/ most important questions and answers on the subject: the various sun protection concepts and UV filters, their effects and side effects, application questions and tips for a healthy summer tan without risking premature skin aging.

Why is sun protection so important?

Sun protection is important for our skin - without a doubt. Because excessive UV radiation dries out the skin, causing redness and sunburn. It increases the risk of skin cancer, damages the healthy cell structure and contributes to premature skin aging.

On the other hand, sunlight in sufficient quantities is an indispensable prerequisite for our health. Sunlight increases mental and physical well-being, it promotes the reduction of stress hormones, improves immune protection and activates the formation of vital vitamin D in our body. It is therefore important not to block the skin completely from UV radiation, but to find sensible ways of dealing with the sun.

What is behind a "sun allergy"?

According to experts, up to 20% of the population in Germany suffer from symptoms that are usually referred to as “sun allergies”, but are not real allergies. In the case of polymorphic light eruption (PMD), those affected suffer from severely itchy, reddened and inflamed skin, which becomes visible approx. 1 - 2 days after intensive exposure to the sun. Sometimes there are additional swellings or blisters that are filled with fluid. Symptoms are visible on areas of skin that have been directly exposed to the sun. These are mainly the face, décolleté, arms and legs.

The exact causes of PMD are unknown and not yet researched. The main triggers are strong UV rays that hit skin that has been weaned from the sun, for example during a long walk in the clear spring sun or at the beginning of a summer holiday. The symptoms usually go away on their own after a few days.

Antiseptic zinc ointments are recommended to alleviate the symptoms. To prevent PMD, you should be very careful when acclimating your skin to the sun and preferably stay in the shade. Body covering clothing made of tightly woven, preferably dark natural fibers, a hat and a high-SPF mineral sunscreen offer additional protection. Also make sure that your cosmetics do not contain any unnecessary additives such as fragrances, emulsifiers, preservatives or alcohol.

How much UV radiation does the body need to build up enough vitamin D?

Only 10-20% of our vitamin D needs are met through diet. Foods with a lot of vitamin D are, for example, eggs, dairy products or avocados. The remaining 80-90% are produced in the skin under the influence of sunlight, stored in muscles and adipose tissue. Above all, UV-B radiation ensures that the body produces enough vitamin D - an indispensable prerequisite for the absorption of calcium from food, for healthy bone formation and a strong immune system. To balance vitamin D levels, it is recommended to expose your face and arms to the sun for 15-20 minutes a day.

Is sunscreen really the best sunscreen?

Important to know: There is no sunscreen that covers the entire spectrum of ultraviolet and infrared radiation. It is therefore not sufficient as protection on its own. It is therefore important to be moderate in the sun, avoiding the mid-summer sun between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. and wearing body-covering clothing, a hat and sunglasses with a UV-400 label.

Is daily sun protection necessary?

When the skin needs UV protection and whether daily sun protection is actually necessary depends on various factors: for example the time of year, the intensity of UV radiation, the current ozone concentration in the atmosphere, the duration of sun exposure and last but not least from your individual skin type. A day cream with uniform sun protection cannot meet these very different requirements. In addition, a sun protection factor of 15 almost completely blocks the body's own production of vitamin D.
