Lactic acid

Lactic Acid

100% vegan lactic acid, also known as lactate, is obtained biotechnologically through the fermentation of carbohydrates such as sugar or starch. Of course, lactic acid is also found in milk as well as in beer and whey. As part of a healthy diet, lactic acid balances intestinal flora and stabilizes the immune system.

Cosmetically, lactic acid is a most effective care substance especially for sensitive skin. It is one of the so-called alpha-hydroxy acids (AHA acids for short). These acids are found in many fruits and plants that produce sugar in their metabolic process.

The main properties of lactic acid:

  • stabilizes the skin flora at a slightly acidic pH value of around 5.0 to 5.5;
  • strengthens the skin's barrier function against moisture loss and against external pollutants that can cause pimples;
  • counteracts skin cornifications with an extremely gentle peeling effect;
  • naturally inhibits the growth of microbial germs;
  • contributes to stimulate the formation of new ceramides and collagen fibers in the connective tissue;
  • helps pigment spots gradually getting paler; the complexion appears even and gently smoothed.

Lactic acid is contained as an active ingredient in a large number of myrto products - including our Cleansing Cream, our Toner, our Day and Night Creams, and the myrto Facial Serums.
